As part of the Creative Thinking Project’s ‘Creativity Across Cultures’ series, we showcase three artists from the ‘2019 Chinese Young Artist Residence Programme.’ The central element of the exhibition revolves around luscious intoxications of ‘introductory experiences’: to be at once captivated and captive in one’s involvement with something. The completed works were shown at Hu’s Farm as part of the ‘Amuse Bouche’ exhibition.

What is creativity to you?
To live in a world with full interest. I hope to explore and discover unusual perspectives. By using photography I can create ideas and feelings. This gives me a precious meaning in life.
When are you most creative?
When I can continuously brainstorm and separate my thoughts from everyday life!
Describe your latest artwork in New Zealand.
When I arrived in New Zealand everything was strange to me. I tried to become familiar with the environment, but most of all, to be curious. Yet I still had no idea what to make or photograph.
All of that changed when I was taken to Muriwai Beach north of Auckland. The surface of the black sand, blown by the sea breeze, created an endless abstract painting. I had waited for this moment. It may have been the worst of the New Zealand winter, but it the most attractive weather for a photoshoot. What a magical stage, a powerful yet mysterious atmosphere. How inspiring! We started preparing costumes, props, makeup and lighting, and although we had to give up shortly after arriving due to a storm, I managed to achieve what I wanted.
