The University of Auckland’s first course dedicated to studying creativity will be introduced to the curriculum in July 2015. This General Education course, entitled “The Creative Process,” will be convened by Associate Professor Peter O’Connor (Faculty of Education).
The course will introduce students to current issues in understanding the creative process. A cross disciplinary approach means that students will be exposed to diverse ideas about how the creative process occurs and how it manifests itself in societies. The course will draw from psychology, education, sociology, and biomedicine; lecturers will include creative artists, scientists, researchers and teachers.
Lectures will be used to introduce key ideas; however, smaller tutorial classes will encourage discussion, reflection, and practical experiments in creative processes. The aim is to encourage students to “value the potential place of creativity in their own lives and their communities and come to appreciate a diversity of approaches to problem solving and self-expression.” Students will also be asked to “challenge the myths of who is creative and examine whether creativity can be taught and learnt.”
The new course has proved very popular, with students enrolling from across a range of disciplines.
