This week we heard the awful news that Stephen Hillenburg, creator of SpongeBob Squarepants, had passed away at the age of 57. Cartoons come and go, and some are plain awful, yet it’s widely accecpted that SpongeBob Squarepants was clever enough to be enjoyed by adults, yet crazy enough for kids.
Creative Fellow and neuroscientist David Eagleman often talks about the merits of bending, breaking and blending to generate new ideas, which is exactly what happened to Stephen Hillenburg. A marine biloigist by trade, he married his love of marine life with animation to create an anarchic TV show which spanned 250 episodes.
Stephen was diagnosed with ALS in March 17 2017 and died on the 26th November 2018.
